Sligo Mens Development Network

Sligo Men’s Development Network was set up in 2011 to provide an opportunity for agencies and communities to improve the level of knowledge about issues affecting men and what services are available for them.
The Network meets quarterly and is open to those who have an interest in this area of work. Those represented include health services, men’s groups, community and voluntary sector, and family resource centres.

Sligo Men’s Association

The idea for the Sligo Men’s Shed grew out of a series of conversations between people involved in the statutory and community sector who have regular contact with men in the course of their work.

A need was identified for a specific space for men that would be autonomous and to this end the Sligo Men’s Shed Association has come into being; supported by Sligo Leader Partnership Co. and the HSE, the members have brought the initial idea to the point of being an independent association with its own rules, constitution, and self-directed activities.

A quick word on what is a “Men’s Shed” It’s a place where men can meet other men and get involved in activities that they decide they would like to undertake. The ethos of the Shed movement is that all men have something to offer, whether it is a range of skills, experiences, interests, conversation or just company for others.

The activities are self-directed, meaning that whatever happens in a Shed is a reflection of the interests of the members; there is no obligation to take part in anything if you are not interested. You can come along and have a cup of tea, a chat, a game of cards, or just pass the time in whatever fashion suits.
