BTWEA - Back to Work Enterprise Allowance

You may be eligible for financial support under the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance or the Short Term Back to Work Enterprise Allowance.

Back to Work Enterprise Allowance is an allowance available from the Department of Social and Family Affairs through Sligo LEADER Partnership Company.

It provides financial support to people who are unemployed to set up their own self employment business.
Since May 2009 there are two types of Back to Work Enterprise Allowance namely:

The Back to Work Enterprise Allowance

  • To avail of this you need to be twelve months unemployed and in receipt of Jobs Seekers allowance.
  • You may be eligible for the allowance if you are in receipt of other types of social welfare payments, please check with you local social welfare office.

Those who are successful in their application will receive:

  • Two years financial support package in the form of the retention of their social protection payment
  • 100% in year one and 75% in year 2.
  • You may also be eligible for a grant from social protection to help with advertising, insurance or equipment costs for your business.
  • Mentoring support is also available.

Short Term Back to Work Enterprise Allowance

This new allowance was introduced to assist recently unemployed people to assist in setting up their self employment business.
  • To avail of this allowance you need to be in receipt of Job Seekers Benefit only.
  • Those who are successfully with their application will retain their Job Seekers Benefit
  • You may also be eligible for a grant from social protection to help with advertising insurance or equipment costs.
  • Mentoring support is also available.
  • There is no qualifying period, which means you do not need to have been getting Jobseeker’s Benefit for a certain period of time
  • However, you will not qualify if you are getting Jobseeker’s Benefit and working part-time.
  • Short-Term Enterprise Allowance is paid instead of your Jobseeker’s Benefit for a maximum of 9 months
  • It ends when your entitlement to Jobseeker’s Benefit ends (that is at either 9 or 6 months).
